Museum Gherdëina

The Ladin Val Gardena Museum - Museum de Gherdeina - in the Cësa di Laden in the center of Ortisei in Val Gardena, South Tyrol opened in 1960 and houses collections of cultural and natural historical development of the valley. The museum building was built in 1953 Cësa di Laden of the Union di Laden de Gherdeina also for the purpose of housing a museum of Val Gardena.

Items on display include the crucifix of Sëurasas of Vincent Peristi and Baptist Walpoth (1932 ), the Way of the Cross relief of Vincent Moroder (1921) and an oil painting of the painter Josef Moroder - Lusenberg ( 1846-1939 ) with a view of St. Ulrich in 1860, emerged in 1925.

The first exhibition room is dedicated to the beginnings of Baroque religious art in Val Gardena. On display are the original sculptures from the St. James Parish Church. It is work of local sculptor dynasty of Vinazer which dominated the religious art work in Val Gardena 1650-1800. In addition, to see the original altarpiece of St. Jacob's Church by Franz Sebald Unterberger (1751 ) from Cavalese. The older workshop of sculptor dynasty of Trebinger is documented with four precious saints ( 1700 ).

The second exhibition space offers a tour through the historical creation of art in Val Gardena 1650-1950: in the first case religious small sculptures from the workshops of the early Baroque sculptor Trebinger ( 17th century) and Vinazer ( 17-18 c.). A selection of nativity figures, crucifixion groups, angel candlesticks, candle holders, clocks stand, photo frames, cartoons, allegorical figures, Tierdar settings, and more. provides insight into the folk carving of the 18th and 19th centuries produced in homework, this was first by traveling merchants, sold throughout Europe later on a complex business network. Including a Pietà of Jacob Sotriffer founder of the first art school in Val Gardena in 1825.

The first half of the 20th century is represented by two collections of works by the sculptor Albino Pitscheider ( 1877-1962 ) and Luis Insam ( 1901-1950 ) represented. Noteworthy are the costume figures from the workshop of Josef Moroder - Lusenberg ( 1900 ), the Christmas crib by Luis Anton Insam and nativity scenes altar of his son Luis Insam and the Christmas crib by Vincent Peristi.

The third exhibition space is reserved for the natural history area. A rich collection of local fossils, rocks and minerals provides an insight into the geological structure of the western Dolomites. Noteworthy among the fossils are charred plant remains ( Ortiseia ) from the layers of the Val Gardena Formation, gastropods Footprints, a petrified fish ( Archaeolepidotus leonardii Accordi ), the 280 million year old skeleton of an ichthyosaur from the Buchsteiner layers of Seceda and corals and ammonites finds from the thePuez. In addition to a cross-section of typical minerals of the Alpe di Siusi can be found in this room also has a valuable collection of minerals from other localities of the Alpine area (among rock crystal from the Ahrntal, geodes from Teis ). The archaeological section shows the Stone Age finds from Plan de Frea at the Gardena Pass, which are among the most important archaeological traces in the Gardena area (8000-5000 BC ), furthermore, unique testimonials from the Bronze Age as the bronze dagger from Balest mountain ( around 1300 BC BC) and the iron Age finds assemblage from Col de Flam ( 400-15 BC, La Tène period ).

The unique collection of old Gardena wood toy is one of the most notable treasures of the museum; compiled by Johann Senoner- Vastlé in the pre-war period, has this collection on a wide range of toy products that were manufactured 1750-1940 in homework, including the typical Val Gardena mannequin in all production sizes.

Luis Trenker
