Museum of Independence

The Muzeum Niepodległości ( German: Independence Museum ) in Warsaw was founded on 30 January 1990. Seat of the museum is the Przebendowski Palace at Aleja Solidarności 62 in the center of Warsaw.

The museum was created from the Muzeum historii Polskiego Ruchu Rewolucyjnego ( German: Museum of the History of Polish revolutionary movement ). Initially it was called the Muzeum historii Polskich Ruchow Niepodległościowych i Społecznych ( German: Museum of the History of Polish independence movement and society), 1991, then received its present name. The Przebendowski Palace was assigned to the Museum by the Polish Ministry of Culture ( Ministerstwo Kultury i Sztuki ) as a seat. In 1992 the status of a "national cultural institution " ( Polish National Instytucja Kultury ) the museum.

The museum has three branches:

  • X Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel
  • Prison Museum Pawiak
  • Mauzoleum Walki i Męczeństwa ( memorial of struggle and suffering) in Aleja Szucha

In Przebendowski Palace three permanent exhibitions:

  • " Polonia Restituta ". The independence and the borders 1914-1921
  • " The White Eagle ( Orzel Bialy, the Polish heraldic animal ) over the centuries ." The emblem and coat of arms of the Polish state in the historical development
  • "This means that Poland is Polish" ( zeby BYLA Polska Polska). History of the Opposition in the People's Republic (1945 to 1989)

From 1990 to 2007, around 200 exhibitions were organized, which were attended by more than 7 million people. Since 1994, the museum management is the history publication " Niepodległość i Pamięć " (independence and memory ) out.
