Museumsquartier (Vienna U-Bahn)

The Museumsquartier is a two-storey, underground station U2 line on the border 1 to 7 district of Vienna. It has two side platforms and is located on the so-called two- line, directly under the museum space. It is named after the Museum Quarter. Outputs carry a small shopping mall at the intersection Mariahilferstraße, Museum Road, Babenbergerstraße and grain market to the surface. The station has elevators and is therefore accessible. Important points in the immediate area are the Museum Quarter, the shopping street Mariahilferstraße, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum.

History

The station was first opened in 1966 with the name Mariahilferstraße as Unterpflaster tram. This name appears in the station, in addition to the labeled to the official metro plan name, the Museum Quarter, on still. On August 30, 1980, the underground operations began. On 6 April 1991 the station was renamed Babenbergerstraße. In 2000-2001 the development of platforms for the operation of long trains took place. In this case, the shopping mall was renovated and restored in view of the opening of the Museum Quarter.

Configuration

Especially for the station of the Tyrolean sculptor and draftsman Rudi Wach 2001 has created the cycle " over the creatures ." The art starts already at the platform; thus should be taught that the area around the station is a focal point of cultural life in the city, because from here the Museum Quarter and the two court - museums can be reached. The 18 oversized pencil drawings on the platforms give the essence of the human form. On the platform 1 ( direction Karlsplatz ), there are 10 drawings on the platform 2 ( direction Scots ring ) is eight.

On the platform there is one further the bronze relief " jubilant ", also by Rudi Wach. From the same artist were in the intermediate level, the bronze sculpture " Guardian ", " life seed" and "Gate of the Hidden " is established.
