Music from Big Pink is the debut album from the Canadian folk and country - rock group The Band. It was published on 1 July 1968 on the label, Capitol Records. Although Music from Big Pink was praised by critics, sales of the album were initially to be desired. In the U.S. Billboard charts, the album finally came after all, number 30, which was partly also due to the fact that the then very popular Bob Dylan was involved in three of the songs. In the UK, Music from Big Pink foundered on the Top 40

Despite the limited commercial success at the time of its release Music from Big Pink applies in addition to the brown album today not only as the best album of the band, but also one of the best and most influential rock albums ever. So it was at the 2003 published by Rolling Stone list of the 500 best albums of all time at number 34

Stylistically mixed Music from Big Pink a number of very different genres, including rock, country, folk, R & B and even classical music. The name of the album derives from the pink house in Saugerties, New York, where the band in 1967, had at that time still under the name The Hawks, along with Dylan lived and recorded the album The Basement Tapes.

About a month after the release of Music from Big Pink one single was coupled. The Weight, with I Shall Be Released as a B- side, though came on the Billboard charts only ranked 69, but reached for it in the UK Top 40 after all space 21 In addition, The Weight 1969 used in the cult film Easy Rider, which the song a classic. On the soundtrack of the film, however, was not the original version of The Band included, but a cover version of Smith due to legal problems.

The Scottish author John Niven described in his published in 2005 novella Music from Big Pink, the making of the album from the perspective of a fictional drug dealer, who at the time was in contact with Dylan and the band.
