Music Production Center

Music Production Center (MPC ) refers to a series of samplers and sequencers or drum machines, the Japanese electronics manufacturer Akai. These were known before the development of the MPC in 1000 under the name MIDI Production Center. However, since the devices were technically demanding and ever better able to deal with audio, it was not technically a classic MIDI sequencer, which is why the series has been renamed.

As before, the Music Production Center primarily known by the acronym MPC Akai MPC respectively and is mainly used in the field of hip- hop.

The concept of MPC 60 and MPC 60 II was developed by Roger Linn. A characteristic feature of the MPC is 16 dynamic and touch sensitive pads, which can also be input drum sounds and samples. The MPC work pattern oriented.

Models

Meanwhile, Akai has released ten MPC and some special models that differ mainly in the memory and expansion options:

MPC 60

The oldest unit in the run. The capacity of the volatile memory of the MPC 60 is default 750 kilobytes, and can be expanded by the installation of a special board to double (1.5 megabytes). Samples are mono, at 40 kHz sample rate and 12-bit (non- linear) recorded resolution. The sound quality is so inferior to a CD while. Maximum can be for 5 seconds to record. Used to his time as the most modern standards, it was instrumental in the formation and development then current music styles. The sound of this musical styles with its now called the " dirtiest " own sound was influenced by the devices, so that nowadays use modern sound modules and software effects to achieve by reducing the sample rate and bit width of the audio signal a sound similar to the sound of the old sampler (as a " lo-fi ", " bit reducer ", " bit grunger " or something similar).

MPC 60 II

This model is based on the MPC 60 and has a completely different case. In addition, a front -sided headphone output has been integrated. The technical details are identical to the MPC 60

MPC 3000

Very rare model with better conversionable memory and firmware significant improvements over the 60th MPC MPC 3000 addition has a display that's easier than its predecessor.

MPC 2000

First ' Kult' -MPC with the option to retrofit up to 32 MB of RAM, an effect board and eight individual outputs. Individual Outputs allow separate processing of different tracks outside the MPC, which considerably improves the flexibility in production. In addition, external SCSI disks and Zip drives or card readers can be connected. An internal floppy drive has the MPC 2000 standard.

MPC 2000XL

The previously popular MPC is an enhanced version of the 2000 model and has a height-adjustable display. From MPC 2000XL also exist several special models which are mainly distinguished optically. A special feature is the MPC 2000XL MCD, which is equipped instead of a floppy disk drive with an internal card reader.

MPC 4000

The MPC 4000, the flagship of the MPC series, has a very large, very well readable display and can be managed via a connected computer completely. It is the most powerful MPC for the entire series, because it can handle khz as the only samples with 24-bit and 96 and the memory is expandable up to 512 MB .

MPC 1000

The first MPC in a compact package comes standard with an internal CompactFlash card reader that can be connected as a mass storage via USB to a PC or Mac, which enables rapid transfer of samples. It also has standard four individual outputs and has taken the classic square now rectangular, slightly harder pads. By default, the device has 16 MB of RAM memory which can be expanded to 128 MB. With the help of an adapter and an internal hard drive can be installed. The MPC 1000 is available in a blue / red and a black version, which technically (up to softer pads with the reliable sensor technology of older MPCs in the new black version, with the exception of the first production runs that version ) are identical. The unofficial firmware JJ OS, written by Japanese hobbyists, gained great attention since it extends the functionality of the MPC 1000 on a MPC 2500 and beyond.

MPC 2500

In the MPC 2500 features such as Chop Shop and Edit Grid have been integrated into the official firmware. The unofficial JJ OS is also available for this model and is preferred by some users due to the changed work flow. The MPC 2500 Special Edition, which is now no longer manufactured, possessed a showy white body and a blue display and a CD burner.

MPC 500

With the option of battery operation makes the MPC 500, the first real mobile model number dar. For the compact size, the number of pads was reduced from 16 to 12 and reduced the display. In addition, the functions of the operating system have been lightened. For example, lack important features such as AUDIO INPUT THRU or CHOP SHOP ( SLICING ) and the assignment options for the Q-Link faders are very limited.

MPC 5000

The MPC 5000 is the current flagship model of the MPC series, the 500, 1000 and 2500 consists of the addition of the MPC models. The MPC 5000 has, among other things, a built-in 24 -voice synthesizer VA, an 8 -track hard disk recorder and a larger display. In addition, the MPC 5000 is already delivered in the basic version with 64 MB Sample Ram, which can be expanded to 192 MB. Other features include the built-in ADAT interface which allows the digital transmission of 8 audio channels. The effect equipment has been expanded over the smaller models. Likewise, the number of Q-Link controllers has been doubled compared to the MPC 2500.
