The formal analysis of a composition is the attempt to understand the compositional structure of the work. This may optionally come to light the artistic intent of the composer. Formal aspects can also be considered as a quality criteria of a composition. Over the centuries, formal schemes have been developed and consolidated in vocal and instrumental music. The study of traditional forms is also recommended for the understanding of more recent form of education.

When analyzing a piece of music first features of the rough outline ( cuts, cadences, etc.) are being sought to then penetrate to smaller form -forming elements (themes, clock groups, motives ). In this way, the risk is counteracted to get lost in details and side issues that do not lead to essential statement about the work. The exact formal analysis allows in many cases only a logical and dramatic correct interpretation. Not least, they can also be an important aid for memorizing a composition.
