5-tert -butyl-2 ,4,6- trinitro -m-xylene ( also briefly Muskxylene ) is a chemical compound selected from the group of aromatic nitro compounds.

Production and representation

Musk xylene is derived from m-xylene by Friedel -Crafts alkylation with tert -butyl chloride and aluminum chloride, followed by nitration with fuming nitric acid, or with a 70:30 mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid.

Properties

Musk xylene is a yellowish solid. He decomposes violently on heating, with nitrous gases. Dissolved in ethanol, the compound has a strong and pleasant smell musky.

Use

Musk xylene was used as a perfume in large amounts. In the EU, its use because of its very large persistence and Bioakkumulativität (vPvB ) will be limited in the coming years. Musk xylene is identified as SVHC under REACH and is included in Annex XIV of substances subject to authorization.
