Mustafa Pasha Mosque

The Mustafa Pasha Mosque (Albanian Xhamia e Mustafa Pashës, macedonian Мустафа - пашина џамија, Turkish Mustafa Paşa Cami ) is located in the Macedonian capital Skopje. It is one of the most important Ottoman monuments in the country.

Location

Situated on an elevated foundation, the mosque stands at the intersection of Prohor Pcinski and Svekarska Street in the oldest quarter of the city - Čair ( Alb. Čairi ). It is located northeast of the medieval Kales / Kalaja ( Engl. city castle ) and west of the Ottoman old town in close proximity to the International Balkan University.

Method of construction

The central part of the mosque is the prayer hall with its dome, with a diameter of 16.3 meters. Inside it is decorated with many arabesques. The prayer hall joins the white marble portico, which is supported by four marble columns. It is covered by three smaller domes, and its pillars are connected by arches. The 47- meter high minaret of limestone rises on the western corner of the main building.

History

The building was built in the last decade of the 15th century by order of the Grand Vizier Mustafa Pasha.

In the 2000s, the entire complex was renovated.

The mosque today

From the medieval mosque complex are now next to the mosque nor the Türbe ( Engl. mausoleum ) of the 1519 deceased builder, which was created in 1963 severely damaged by the severe earthquake; the sarcophagus of his daughter and a fountain available.
