Mustafa ReÅŸid Pasha

Mustafa Resid Pasha ( born March 13, 1800 Konstantin Opel, now Istanbul, † January 7, 1858 ) was an Ottoman statesman and diplomat.

Life

Resid occurred early in the civil service, as he in 1820 in the department of the Foreign Ministry received an appointment as rapporteur. After he was in 1833 involved in the negotiations on the Treaty of Kutahya, he was ambassador in Paris until 1834, then in 1836 in London and in November 1837 finally Secretary of State. As a result of the counter- efforts of the old Turkish Party, he was suddenly released in the fall of 1838 and went as envoy extraordinary of the Sultan to London, Berlin and Paris, where he joined the Viceroy of Egypt represented the interests of the gate opposite.

After Sultan Mahmud II 's death on July 1, 1839, he was recalled by the mother of the new Sultan Abdülmecid by Konstantin Opel and took over on September 5, again the Foreign Ministry. In its operation November 3, 1839 the Hatti-sherif of Gulhane was adopted. Seraglio intrigues led in March 1841 brought about his downfall, whereupon he went back as an envoy to Paris in July. In January 1843 dismissed from there, he was suspected of the Sultan as despisers of Turkishness, banished as governor by Adrian Opel, the position did not accept but, but returned to Paris.

After the fall Riza Pasha end of 1845 he was firstly re- Minister of the Foreign Office and in 1846 finally grand vizier (meaning starting in 1922 and until today: Prime Minister ), a post that he held until 1857 under Abdülmecid six times.

As Grand Vizier he introduced many reforms in the legal system, education and administration by:

  • Prohibition of torture and slavery
  • Introduction of mixed commercial courts in 1847
  • Acquisition of a commercial code of France in 1850
  • Introduction Middle School Rüştiye / رشديه
  • Founding of the learned society Encümen -i Danis by decree in 1851
  • Foundation of the " Hazine -i evrak " / خزينه اوراق, today's Ottoman Archives by decree in 1846

In the meantime, officiated Resid from May 1853 once again as foreign minister and promoted in this function, the anti-Russian policy of the Ottoman Empire. He was instrumental in the introduction of a fundamental reorganization of the administration of the State, with the Ottoman Constitution took as a historical process Tanzimat, 18 years after his death to an end.

Resid died on January 7, 1858 at the age of 57 years.
