The Funchal is a passenger ship of the Portuguese shipping company Portuscale Cruises, based in Lisbon. Its home port is Funchal, capital of Madeira belonging to Portugal. It is noteworthy that the name of the ship in its 50-year history despite several ownership changes and some modifications has never been changed.

History

The Funchal was built on the Danish shipyard Helsingor Skibsværft above Maskinbyggeri. The launch took place on February 10, 1961 In October 1961 the ship for the shipping company Empresa de Insulana Navegacao based in Lisbon, for combined use as a ferry and cruise ship on the route Lisbon -. Madeira - Azores put into service. In the winter of 1972/73 it was rebuilt at the shipyard Nederlandse Dok in Amsterdam to a cruise ship. Since the originally existing steam turbine plant had proved too troublesome, this was replaced by diesel engines. As of March 1973, Funchal was for the shipping company Cia. Portuguesa transport Marítimos based in Lisbon as a cruise ship in use. From 1985, she went for the shipping company Arcalia Shipping Company. After a further renovation in the fall of 2003 it belonged to the fleet of Classic International Cruises, which is also the Princess Danae Princess Daphne and the Athena belonged. Following the bankruptcy of the shipping company in September 2012, the ship was launched. In May 2013, Funchal was purchased by the newly formed shipping company Portuscale Cruises and rebuilt in Lisbon at a 4- star cruise ship. In this case, the ship was returned to its original black hull.

On August 28, 2013, Funchal was chained because of security deficiencies in Gothenburg and could not begin their first cruise after the conversion. Passengers had to leave the ship.

Machinery

Originally ordered the Funchal on two sets of Parsons geared turbines, which worked on the two propellers and allowed a speed of approximately 20 knots. They developed a total capacity of 9,000 kW (approx. 12,250 hp). As part of the renovation work in the winter 1972/73, the plant was removed and replaced by two nine-cylinder diesel engines from Stork Werkspoor. At a speed of 500 rpm do the engines together approximately 7,356 kW ( 10,000 hp). To power the ship is equipped with five diesel generators.
