The Rena was a Panamax container ship sailing under the flag of Liberia. The ship was bereedert of the Greek company Costa Mare and was chartered for five years on the Mediterranean Shipping Company since June 2011.

Construction, commissioning and operation

The Rena was built as ZIM America under the hull number 247 on the German HDW - Werft AG in Kiel. The keel was laid on October 4, 1989, the completion on April 1, 1990.

The ship was powered by a low-speed eight-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type Sulzer RTA76, which was built by the Polish manufacturer Cegielski under license. He looked directly to the fixed-pitch propeller and produced at a speed of 98/min 22,000 kW.

The ZIM America was provided as the type ship of the comprehensive seven ships ZIM- America - class service and placed in service under the flag of Israel for the Israeli company Zim Integrated Shipping Services. In May 2012, the Filipino captain and the navigation officer, who were accused of negligent driving, pollution and judicial disability, were sentenced to seven months' imprisonment. The captain departed under pressure from the planned route and have made fatal mistake, it said in the notice.
