Myriophyllum

Ähriges milfoil

Milfoil ( Myriophyllum ) is a genus of freshwater plants from the family of milfoil plants ( Haloragaceae ). The botanical name means ( Greek) myri = " countless" and phyllon = "leaf".

General

Milfoil species are freshwater plants, they grow in lakes and ponds in 50 to 200 cm depth. This depth zone is also called dipping plant zone. From depth 2 m, the plants can not grow because of the low light availability. Only in exceptionally clear, clean and plankton -poor lakes plants can thrive even a few feet deeper.

Description

Milfoil species are annual or perennial herbaceous plants, submerged or something protruding from the water to grow ( hydrophytes ). Are formed rhizomes. The soft stems are sparsely branched to strong. The elasticity of the stems of this plant flooding has the advantage that it does not bend easily so by the flow and move along. Every three or four leaves are arranged in whorls, rarely leaves are arranged opposite one another. The main feature of milfoil species are the leaves. They have a feathered shape and are in whorls. This distinguishes them from the other pond plants.

But there is a feature which is only found in this genus: it is the only genus in the diving zone plants whose inflorescences emerging from the water. The inflorescences are thin and greens and therefore rather unimpressive. The usually unisexual, rarely hermaphrodite flowers are two - by fours. The male and hermaphrodite flowers contain two to eight stamens. The female and hermaphrodite flowers contain an under constant, (rarely two - up ) vierkammerigen ovary. A stylus is missing and therefore, the four scars sit directly on the ovary. The fruits are divided into four sub- fruits, each with one seed.

Occurrence

This genus is found almost worldwide. Most types are available in Australia. In China, you will find eleven species. Tausenblatt species come in all stagnant waters of large, freshwater lakes rich before to small ponds.

Hunting and

A number of species play a role in the aquarium hobby. However, their maintenance requires some experience. Contributing to this is that most aquatic plants nurseries use this on damp ground at high humidity for trade. In such a way emers zoom bred plants form of urges stronger than those in submerged culture. Although the plants are presented basically submerged in stores. However, relied on emersed plants must be gradually accustomed to living under water. For this purpose, it can be planted out in nutrient- rich soil and then increased every day the water level by 1 centimeter, until the water level of the aquarium is reached. When you remove this adaptation state, the plant go very quickly.
