The software supports analog TV cards, analog with hardware encoder and digital DVB-T/-S/-C-Karten/USB-Geräte, exist for the Linux driver. There is the possibility to use them as TV card Also for the d- box2 with Linux operating system. MythTV supports the simultaneous operation of multiple TV cards. For DVB cards can also buy several shipments that are sent on the same transponder, are also included.

Broadcasts can be recorded in the following formats:

  • Modified NuppelVideo container with MPEG -4 or MJPEG video
  • MPEG-2
  • H.264 in an MPEG-2 transport stream ( hardware encoder or DVB)

Media such as USB drives are automatically detected and possibly involved. UPnP is supported. Advertising blocks can be automatically detected and deleted.

MythTV differs from comparable open-source programs that it corresponds to a client - server model. Thus, a computer can process and store the recordings, while a plurality of computers over a network can play the recordings. The client, called by MythTV frontend is available for Linux, Microsoft Windows ( limited external project ) and Mac OS X is available and can be changed using templates in appearance. Even multiple servers with TV cards can be connected together. The client software uses OpenGL or Qt to display the menu and VDPAU for playback on a Nvidia graphics card.

In the course of time, MythTV has developed into a versatile product, especially thanks to its plug-in structure. This structure makes it possible to develop extensions to MythTV independent of the basic functionality. Program information is loaded via xmltv from the Internet or obtained via DVB and stored in the MySQL database of MythTV.

Among other things, the following plugins are officially supported:

  • MythBrowser is a module that allows the viewing of web sites.
  • MythGallery allows the viewing of image files and create slideshows.
  • MythGame is a surface that allows for easy use of emulators ( xmame, snes, nes) and native computer games from MythTV out.
  • MythMusic manages music and this is also again, also there are visualization functions.
  • MythMovies shows cinema halls to close.
  • MythNetvision provides access to a variety of Internet video providers like YouTube or Blip.tv, but is not yet considered mature.
  • MythNews processed feeds and plays it.
  • MythWeather displays a weather report.
  • MythWeb is a Web interface for MythTV. It allows, for example, the programming of recordings via a web browser.
  • MythArchive is a module with which you can easily burn the recorded programs to a DVD.
  • MythZoneminder allows MythTV to access a ZoneMinder installation.

The basic system integrates smoothly with the modules. It is operated via the keyboard or, much more comfortable, using a remote control. In addition, the mouse can be used with mouse gestures in the menus.
