N-acetylgalactosamine is the common name for 2 -acetylamino -2-deoxy -D-galactose, galactose, or a derivative of the galactosamine.
It serves as a building block for the synthesis of glycolipids (eg gangliosides ) and glycoproteins of the cell membrane, as well as hyaluronic acid and other mucopolysaccharide - proteins.
The blood group antigen A contains N- acetylgalactosamine, the blood group antigen B instead contains galactose and in the blood group 0 lacks this sugar residue.
