N. F. Simpson

Norman Frederick " N. F. " Simpson ( born January 29, 1919 in London, † August 27 2011 in Cornwall ) was a British playwright. He is with his humorous, brimming with puns works as a leading representative of the British theater of the absurd.

Life and work

NF Simpson attended Emanuel School in London and the University of London. During World War II he served in the Intelligence Corps, the espionage corps of the British armed forces. Until 1962 he worked as an English teacher in adult education.

His most famous work is the play One Way Pendulum ( German The World of Groomkirbys ) of 1959, which was filmed in 1964 by Peter Yates with actors Eric Sykes and George Cole. The plot revolves around a family Groomkirby and their absurd hobbies, including the father, the Criminal Court of the Old Bailey reconstructs in his living room and also goes mad.

In 1970 he had a small guest role on Aram Avakian Drama The path into the abyss as Dr. Schott. Then it was quiet around Simpson, who succeeded no more success on the stage.

Classification

The similarity of Simpson's work with the work of Eugène Ionesco was early on found which should be based primarily on an affinity for the absurd.

The literary scholar Stephan Rupp comes in 2003, however, to conclude that Simpsons work in contrast to the Ionesco was hardly influenced by the absurd and he only used a similar dramatic technique. Numerous similarities of A Resounding Tinkle and One Way Pendulum with Eugène Ionesco's older works come right for him plagiarism. This impression was reinforced by Simpson veiling statements in interviews. In the legal sense, however, Rupp would not speak of plagiarism.
