The National Route 5 (short- N5) is a South African national road that runs starting in Harrismith far as Winburg.

Route

The N5 is a national road, which involves no urban or industrial conurbations. It combines two main toll roads of South Africa north of Lesotho, the N3 and N1.

From the N3 Harrismith runs along the northern foothills of the Drakensberg by only slightly populated area. She takes on the traffic einmündender regional roads, such as the R74, R57 and R711. In Bethlehem crosses the R26 and branches off the R76. In this city there is also a railway junction.

Further towards the west they passed the expiring ridges of mountains and the places Witte Paul Roux and Senekal. In the latter town the N5 crosses a railway line and a few kilometers after that branches off the R70 in a northwesterly direction at Welkom tapering off. The N5 is now turning more towards the southwest and reaches its other endpoint in Winburg.

Track Removal

In all sections the road is built with asphalt surface and two lanes. Over most of its course, it is flanked on both sides a fortified border strip of gravel only in a few sections.

On the N5, there are no toll booths.
