Nagoya University

The University of Nagoya (Japanese名古屋 大学, Nagoya daigaku, in short: Meidai or Nadai (名 大) ) is a state university in Japan. The main campus is located in furo -chō, Chikusa -ku, Nagoya.

History

The Nagoya University was founded in 1871 as a Temporary Medical School (仮 医 学校, Kari igakkō ). The school was 1878 public medical school (of Aichi prefecture ). In 1903 she became the prefectural medical technical school Aichi (爱 知 県 立 医学 専 门 学校), 1920 then the prefectural Medical University Aichi (爱 知 県 立 医科大学, Aichi kenritsu ika daigaku ). The university was founded in 1931 as a state institution renamed to Medical University of Nagoya (名古屋 医科大学, Nagoya ika daigaku ).

In 1939, the Imperial University of Nagoya (名古屋 帝国 大学, Nagoya teikoku daigaku ) was founded, the last Imperial University. The Medical University of Nagoya was their Medical School. In 1940, she founded the Natural and Engineering Sciences, which in 1942 was divided into two faculties, and later moved into the new campus Higashiyama. The university was renamed in 1947 in Nagoya University.

In 1949 it was merged with three state schools for the new Nagoya University. The three were: the Eighth High School (第八 高等学校, Dai- hachi Kōtō Gakko, founded in 1908 ), the business school Nagoya (名古屋 経 済 専 门 学校, Nagoya keizai Semmon Gakko, founded in 1920 ) and the Higher Normal School Okazaki (冈 崎 高等 师范学校, Okazaki Kōtō shihan Gakko, founded in 1945 ). The former campus of the Eighth high school is now the Yamanohata campus of the City University of Nagoya; the former campus of the business school Nagoya is now the campus of the City University Kawasumi.

The University Library consists of 2.9 million volumes, of which 1.4 million in foreign languages ​​.

Among the graduates of the University include Toshihide Masukawa and Makoto Kobayashi in 2008 received the Nobel Prize for Physics. Other famous graduates are the molecular biologists and Reiji Okazaki Tsuneko discovered the Okazaki fragments, the Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda Toyota and the Governor Reiji Suzuki. Ryoji Noyori, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2001, taught at the university.
