Large Naiad ( Najas marina)

The Great Naiad ( Najas marina), also marine Naiad or Large Nixkraut called, is a plant which belongs to the family and the frog bite plants ( Hydrocharitaceae ). There is an underwater plant.

Occurrence

This type occurs worldwide in tropical and temperate zones, with a focus on the Northern Hemisphere: North America, Latin America and Eurasia.

They settled standing or slowly flowing waters up to a depth of 3 meters. Like all nymphs herb thrives the Great Naiad in freshwater. In addition, it is to be found in Sweden and Denmark in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. In the more saline North Sea, however, the Great Naiad missing. Overall, the species is rarely seen and is due to water pollution in decline.

Description

The Great Naiad is annual herbaceous plant, which reaches stature lengths between 10 and 50 centimeters. It has stiff, gabelspaltige and fragile stems. The opposite constantly standing on the stems leaves are linear, 1-6 mm broad, coarsely corrugated and perforated prickly.

This species is dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The appearing under water flowers are inconspicuous. The male is 1.7 to 3 mm long flower consists only of one stamen. The female 2.5 to 5.7 mm long flowering contains a 1.2 to 1.7 mm long stylus, which ends with a three-lobed stigma. Pollination of flowers takes place under water.

The reddish-brown, egg-shaped nut fruit is from 2.2 to 8 mm long and 1.2 to 2.5 mm wide. You will endozoisch spread primarily by ducks. As propagation strategy that Big Naiad this also uses the digestive spread. The fruits can pass through the digestive system of ducks without prejudice.
