Nakhimov Medal

The Nachimov Medal (Russian Медаль Нахимова ) was a military decoration of the former Soviet Union, which was founded on March 3, 1944 in a step by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.

Award conditions

The Nachimov Medal served the assessment of merits of the members of the Soviet naval fleet. Their ceremony was possible to soldiers and sailors, petty officers and sergeants, master, Sergeant and cadets of the naval fleet as well as the maritime border troops. Specifically, could the Medal for outstanding acts to protect the fatherland, for positive action for the successful fulfillment of the combat task set are given. Furthermore, for gallant conduct in protecting the maritime borders of the USSR, and for selfless action in the performance of military duty.

Stylish look and manner

The bronze medal is made of non-ferrous metal, has a diameter of 36 mm and shows on its obverse center, the left -facing portrait of the namesake of the coin, the Russian Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov with sailor cap and its overlying rank and surname Адмирал Нахимов ( Admiral Nachimov ). At the bottom of the medal two diagonally crossed laurel branches are shown. The reverse of the coin, however, shows a centered 13 mm diameter rope circle with the battleship Azov, which Nachimov commanded at that time. Below and above stand out two diagonally crossed and partially concealed anchors. The symbolism is confined by an anchor chain and a Perlkreis. The eye of the coin is held in anchor shape at its upper end, a blue pentagonal clip is fixed. In the middle of three 3 mm wide white vertical center stripes are woven, which relate to each other at a distance of 2 mm. The Interim clasp is of the same nature. Award numbers

The relatively late foundation of the coin in the spring of 1944 meant that the medal was awarded as part of the Great Patriotic War, little and very economical. The Erstverleihung on April 10, 1944, the Sergeant MA Kolosov, and the two sailors EW Tolstov and FG Moshkov the Northern Fleet. The Erstverleihung to members of the Black Sea Fleet took place on April 20, 1944, the sailors ND Belik and the upper master GI Belikov and the bar top master IF Belkin. Three members of the Baltic fleet, the sailors NG Wawilkin, IS Gavrilov and the foreman WA Wassilew, the medal received on 26 June 1944. Overall, the medal was awarded to the war, 12,800 times. By early 1981, the number of awards grew to more than 13,000. Until the ceremony settings in 1991 it was awarded approximately 14,000 times.
