Nankeen

Nanking ( according to the Chinese city of Nanjing ) is a calico canvas -like fabric. Originally from yellowish red Chinese cotton (Gossypium religiosum ) produced material was appreciated for its color fastness. In Europe, counterfeit Nanking was made until the 20th century stained white cotton. These were dipped alternately in the substance iron sulfate or iron chloride and soda baths. The initially green color turns to air in rust-brown iron hydroxides. The artificially dyed cotton fabrics were less uniform in color, not fast to washing and also less durable.

Over time, other gray, green, blue colored or patterned fabrics were called Nanking.

Especially in the 19th century sundresses from Nanking were popular. In contemporary literature there are many places where yellow Nankinghosen be mentioned as an elegant, tight-fitting clothing. For example, at Heinrich Heine 's poem Götterdämmerung " The men draw on the Nankinhosen, And Sonntagsröck ' with golden mirror buttons; ... ".

Early 20th century Chinese Nanking came out of fashion.
