Nanos (plateau)

The eastern edge of the Karst plateau falls from the mountain Pleša ( 1262 m) steeply from Razdrto, to the west, the mountain range reduces gradually to 500 m from. To the north it borders on the ridge of the forest Birnbaumer ( Hrušica ).
The Nanos, together with the Birnbaumer Wald, the plateau of Schwarzenberg ( Slow: Crni Vrh ), the hinterland of the river Hubelj, the western parts of Ternowaner forest ( Trnovski gozd ) and Banjšice a hydrogeological unit, the karst water body of Mesozoic Dachsteinkalken and Kalkbreccien is determined. This form highly porous karst aquifer with high hydraulic conductivity. It is consistently to deep karst. On three sides of the karst aquifer of Nanos and Birnbaumer forest of flysch is limited and is bordered to the northeast by Predjama disorder. The area is an important watershed between the catchment areas of the Adriatic and the Danube (see watersheds in the Alps).
Climatically, the ridge of the Nanos is on the border between the temperate continental climate and the domestic - sub-Mediterranean climate of Wippach Valley. The area is one of the wettest regions of Slovenia ( up to 2000 mm). The vegetation of the sparsely populated region is part of the Dinaric fir-beech forest.
In ancient times, the Nanos and the surrounding regions was called Okra Mountains. According to the Greek geographer Strabo here moved the Celtic- Illyrian tribe of the Iapoden. In Roman times, the Nanos lay on the border between Italy and the province of Pannonia.
On the Pleša is a TV station that was bombed during the 10-day war on 28 June 1991 by the Yugoslav Air Force. In the vicinity of the transmitter system is the Vojkova mountain hut, which can also be reached via a road.
Transmitter
On the Nanos is since 1953 a transmission system of the Slovenian broadcasting for radio and television. The antenna carrier serve two transmission towers with 52 and 35 meters.
