Nares Strait

Geographical location

The Nares Strait (Danish Strædet Nares, English Nares Strait) is a waterway between Ellesmere Island ( the northernmost part of Nunavut, Canada) and Greenland. It connects Baffin Bay with the Lincolnsee in the Arctic Ocean. From south to north, there is a road from the Smith Sound, the Kane Basin, Kennedy Channel, the Hall Basin and the Robeson channel. Denmark and Canada recognized in 1964 naming the street after the British navigator, admiral and Arctic explorer George Nares officially. Nares was the theory of the ice-free Arctic Ocean refuted during an expedition in 1875 and 1876.

The road and adjacent waters are usually risky for the shipping. In August, however, it is navigable for icebreakers. Only five ships were registered Prior to 1948, who had traveled the road successfully.

The Hans Island, a tiny island within the waterway, has long claimed by both Denmark and Canada, until finally an agreement was reached in September 2005.
