Narthang Monastery

Narthang is a monastery of the Kadam school, the first Sarma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The village Narthang the community Qumig is about 15 km west of Shigatse in Tibet, People's Republic of China. The monastery was founded in 1153 by Tumtön Lodrö dragpa, a student Sharawas.

Along with the monasteries Shalu, Sakya and Trashilhünpo it is one of the four great monasteries of the Tsang region. It is next to the Potala in Lhasa and Dege Parkhang in Derge one of the three major traditional Tibetan printing sites. Famous are his block print editions of the Kanjur and Tanjur from the Tibetan Tripitaka.
