Naryan-Mar

Naryan -Mar (Russian Нарьян - Мар ) is the capital of the Autonomous Okrug of the Nenets in northwest Russia with 21 658 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located north of the Arctic Circle on the right bank of the lower Pechora, around 110 km above its confluence with the Barents Sea. The distance to Moscow is 1540 km and good for city Arkhangelsk around 660 km. The nearest town is Ussinsk in the Komi Republic, about 270 km south-east of Naryan -Mar. Naryan Mar has polar climate.

History

The village was founded in 1929, simultaneously with the creation of the Autonomous Okrug of the Nenets in the Russian SFSR. Initially it was a urban-type settlement, which was created in place of the village Beloschtschelje with the construction of a sawmill. In the early days it was known as " Felix Dzerzhinsky workers 'settlement '. 1931, the settlement was declared the capital of the Autonomous Okrug, and two years later the name of Naryan - Mar ( "City of communism" was meant ) It was given to the Nenets " Red City " means. Economy and Transport
