Nat Adderley

Nathaniel " Nat" Adderley ( born November 25, 1931 in Tampa, Florida; † January 2, 2000 in Lakeland, Florida ) was an American jazz cornetist, trumpeter, composer and bandleader. He is best known for his roles in the band of his brother Julian " Cannonball" Adderley.

Life

Nat Adderley had in early youth jazz singer, learned trumpet at age 15 and then switched to cornet. Like his brother Cannonball Adderley, he played during his military service in Army bands and then got in 1954/55, a commitment in the band of Lionel Hampton, then with Stan Kenton. In 1955, a first album under his own name. After a short involvement in the quintet of his brother (1956 ), which failed for financial reasons, Nat Adderley worked after changing from Cannonball to Miles Davis with JJ Johnson and 1959, Woody Herman and George Shearing, and then go into the re-founded Cannonball Adderley Quintet. This he was a member until the death of his brother in 1975.

Besides this activity, Nat Adderley has repeatedly received albums with his own bands, as with studio big bands or musicians such as Joe Henderson, King Curtis, Jerome Richardson, Junior Mance and Wes Montgomery ( Work Song, 1960). One of his best albums include the 1963 Mance and Henderson and Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell rehearsed album Little Big Horn!.

In 1961, he contributed to the album Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man and Other Billie Holiday Classics. After a brief teaching career and touring as a guest soloist Peter Herbolzheimers Big Band founded Nat 1976, a year after Cannonball's death, a new formation with saxophonist John Stubblefield, pianist Onaje Allan Gumbs, bassist Fernando Gumbs and drummer Ira Buddy Williams together. His albums from this period were in the critique by more; however, was his concert in 1977 in Yokohama with Jay Jay Johnson was a great success.

In 1980, he performed at European festivals with the Adderley Brotherhood, which should remind you of the great time of the quintet with his brother. In 1981, he performed at the Kool on festival, worked in New York in 1982 and 1984 again with Jay Jay Johnson. In the 1990s and played a Sonny Fortune in his band ( " Work Song - live at Sweet Basil ", 1990). His last major appearance before his death in 1994 on the floating festival with his band from Vincent Herring, Walter Booker and Jimmy Cobb.

His tone on the cornet is reminiscent of Clark Terry. In memory Nat Adderley remains for his compositions Work Song, Jive Samba and One for Daddy- O.

His son is the arranger and pianist Nat Adderley Jr. ( b. 1955 ).
