Nathan Adler

Nathan ben Simeon ha - Kohen Adler ( born December 16, 1741 Frankfurt am Main, † September 17, 1800 ) was a German rabbi and kabbalist in Frankfurt. He is considered the founder of a Western Judeo- Hasidic direction ( Frankfurt Hasidim ).

Life

Nathan Adler came from an Ashkenazi family. The Frankfurt eagle family called after the eagle on the imperial flag, the one member of this family was wearing when the Frankfurt Jews returned after fat milk Revolution ( 1614). Nathan Adler was an Orthodox rabbi in Frankfurt and opened his own yeshiva in 1761. His students included later became renowned Rabbi Abraham Bing, Wolf Heidenheim, Seckel Loeb Wormser and Moses Sofer, later rabbi in Pressburg.

In 1782 he was elected rabbi of Boskowitz in Moravia. But he soon made enemies, so he returned to his former position in 1785 to Frankfurt.

He was married to Rachel, daughter of Feist Cohen in Giessen, who survived him. Both had no children, but to Nathan Marcus Adler, who later became Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, have been named after him.

Adler was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Frankfurt am Main.
