Nathi Mthethwa

Nathi Mthethwa Emmanuel Nkosinathi ( born January 23, 1967 in Natal) is a South African politician of the African National Congress ( ANC ), and since May 2009, the Minister of Police.

Life

After schooling Mthethwa completed a degree in Community Development at the University of Natal, where he graduated with a diploma. In addition, he completed a degree in Mining at the University of Johannesburg and ended it with a certificate. Another study in Communication and Leadership Studies at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, he finished with another certificate.

During his school years he was active 1982-1983 in the - at that time illegal - ANC Youth League in Klaarwater and later was its chairman from 1987 to 1989. During this time he also began his career as an organizer at the union for workers in the food industry (Food and Allied Workers Union), and practiced this activity from 1988-1989.

Subsequently, he was from 1989 to 1990 he was appointed Chairman of the Union of unemployed workers ( Unemployed Workers Union ) in the south of the former province of Natal as well as secretary of the local South African Youth Congress. Since 1990 he has been secretary of the ANC branch in Klaarwater. In addition, he was between 1990 and 1992 Regional Secretary of the ANC Youth League in South Natal, before he moved in 1994 to the national headquarters of the ANC Youth League, where he spent ten years to 2004, Secretary of the National Executive Committee for the organization. During this time he was also between 2001 and 2002 also a member of the National Organising Team of the ANC.

Mthethwa was between 2004 and 2008 Chairman of the South African Portfolio Committee on Minerals and Energy, and in 2008 Chief Whip of the ANC.

He was appointed on 10 May 2009 for the Police Minister in the Cabinet Zuma after the election of Jacob Zuma as the new president of South Africa from this. In 2010 he belonged in this function also for Board of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

On 26 February 2012, he contradicted rumors that he would run for the office of Secretary General of the ANC and thus against the previous incumbent Gwede Mantashe.

On June 14, 2012, he appointed with General Mangwashi Victoria " Riah " Phiyega the first woman to head the South African police. The appointment was criticized because Mangwashi Phiyega not come from the police, but was active in the economy.
