National Assembly (Saint Kitts and Nevis)

The National Assembly of Saint Kitts and Nevis, together with Elizabeth II in her capacity as Queen of Saint Kitts and Nevis Parliament of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The National Assembly consists of elected members, the representatives (English Representatives ) and appointed members, the Senators. Currently, three representatives are elected by majority vote in single-member constituencies on St. Kitts and Nevis 8. The Senators ( at least 3, more than two -thirds of the number of representatives ) are appointed by the Governor-General, namely one-third to the proposal of the opposition leader ( Leader of the Opposition) and two-thirds to the proposal of the Prime Minister. In addition, the Attorney General ( Attorney General ), if he already is not Senator or Representative, Senator ex officio.

The National Assembly elect a President ( Speaker) - since April 24, 2008, this is Curtis Martin - and a Vice-Chairman ( Deputy Speaker) - currently Richard Oliver Skerritt. If someone is elected president who is not a member of the National Assembly, the number of members increased again by one.

Election results

The last election was held on 25 January 2010. The ruling St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party defended with about 47 % of the votes and 6 of the 11 elected seats its absolute majority, but lost one seat
