National Bloc (Syria)

The Bloc National (French for National block, Arabic الكتلة الوطنية ) was a Syrian political party which campaigned during the period of the French mandate over Syria for independence.

The party was founded by a national conference in 1928 by Ibrahim Hananu. There was no structured party, but rather a coalition of areas that are more disposed towards the French presence in Syria hostile. The Bloc National was led mainly by notables conservatives; Landowners, merchants, lawyers, etc. This coalition gathered the fifty richest and most powerful families in Syria.

The political participation of these notables in the struggle for independence is a remnant of the political struggle that they had played in their youth against the Ottoman Empire. The Bloc National had no clearly defined ideology, and no social and economic agenda.
