National Church of Nigeria

The National Church of Nigeria ( formerly known as Nigerian Ecumenical Centre, officially National Christian Center ) is the best known and most important Christian church building in Nigeria. Approximately 40-45 % of the population of Nigeria are Christians see Christianity in Nigeria.

The National Church is located in the Central Business District Area, next to the Central Bank of Nigeria, in Abuja, the capital of the country, and is the Christian counterpart to the National mosque of the city, which is also located nearby.

History

As early as 1989 began, the Italian construction company " Gitto Costruzioni Generali Nigeria Ltd " with the construction of the project. However, the work on the church lay fallow for several years, until 2004, the Christian organization in Nigeria established a committee to ensure the rapid completion of the temple. The Baubarbeiten were then completed in 2005. The consecration took place, the Nigerian Anglican Primate, Archbishop Peter Akinola on 2 October of the same year, the same day on which the 45 -year-old Nigeria's independence was celebrated.

Architecture

The church was built in neo-gothic style. The altar is located in the center of the church and rotates automatically every ten minutes once around its own axis. Yellow, green and red glass windows create a special light and can be seen everywhere in the Church. In the right wing of the church is an organ, close beside it are also the seats for the choir.

If there are no Christian festivals celebrated or services are held, the church is accessible to the public. There are also guided tours for interested visitors.
