National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction

The Congresso Nacional de Reconstrução Timorense CNRT (Congress of the Timorese Reconstruction ) is a party in East Timor, which was founded in 2007.

The CNRT is with Xanana Gusmão since 2007 the Prime Minister of East Timor and is since 2012 the most powerful force in the national parliament.

History

The aim of the then President of East Timor Xanana Gusmão was to compete in the 2007 parliamentary elections with the CNRT to obtain as prime minister a politically influential position, particularly against the then ruling party FRETILIN. Gusmão was this officially announced in March 2007, after a petition was handed over to him, in him 6,250 CNRT members calling on after his term as president to remain in politics.

The petition states: " East Timor needs a strong political party with a good guide and a leader that loves the people. That's why we want Xanana. We trust only Dir "

FRETILIN criticized that the new party used as an abbreviation CNRT, as the former federation of the East Timorese resistance to Indonesian occupation ( Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense ) that still has a lot of sympathy in the population. A member of the FRETILIN Central Committee called it the " kidnapping of a powerful historical symbol ".

In the presidential elections of 2007, the CNRT supported the subsequent election winner José Ramos- Horta, a close political friend and companion Gusmão.

In the parliamentary elections on 30 June 2007, the CNRT received 24.10 % of votes and 18 of the 65 seats in parliament. He was behind FRETILIN, which gained 29.02 % and 21 seats. FRETILIN therefore laid claim to the lead in a future government, whether as a minority government or a coalition, but the CNRT was an alliance with the Partido Democrático PD and Coligação ASDT / PSD ( the joint party list of Associação Social Democrata de Timor and Partido Social Democrata ) received. This alliance of the Parliamentary majority, short AMP, possessed with 37 seats a slim majority in parliament. After unsuccessful negotiations with the FRETILIN and mediation attempts by President Ramos -Horta finally Xanana Gusmão was asked to form a government and was now an AMP - government as prime minister before. In addition, he also held the ministerial portfolios for Defence and Natural Resources, Minerals and Energy.

2012 received the CNRT in the parliamentary elections 36.66 % and now stands 30 Members the largest faction in parliament. Gusmão is now leading a coalition with the PD and the Frenti - Mudança FM. Following the announcement of the election result, representatives of CNRT expressed on national television disparagingly of FRETILIN, which had to go back as the second largest party in the opposition now. As a result, there were riots in the outskirts of Dili in which a FRETILIN supporters was shot by a police officer. 15 other people, including four policemen, were injured. 60 cars and seven houses were destroyed. 16 people arrested, the police, as these are the An- Nuur Mosque, East Timor's largest mosque damaged.
