National Democratic Alliance (Sudan)

The National Democratic Alliance (English National Democratic Alliance, abbreviated NDA) is an alliance of opposition parties and organizations in Sudan.

Development

The NDA was established in 1989 after Omar Hassan Ahmad al -Bashir seized power in a military coup and had established a military dictatorship. As in 1995, the South Sudanese rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement ( SPLM) allied with the NDA, this increased their influence clearly. Since 1999, the government gave in to pressure and has reintroduced a multiparty system, the NDA, however, lost its importance. Many member organizations and parties boycotted the 2000 elections, because they are not expired freely and democratically in their opinion.

Following the peace agreement between the government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army, which ended the Civil War in South Sudan, the NDA signed on 9 January 2005, an agreement with the government. Some positions of the NDA, about the ongoing Darfur conflict have not yet been set, which is also the fact that the member organizations are indeed connected by the common goal of eradicating dictatorship, but beyond that partly pursue very different goals.
