National Gallery in Prague

The National Gallery in Prague ( Národní galerie v Praze ) is the Czech National Gallery. It houses works of painting, sculpture and graphics from home and abroad.

History

On 5 February 1796, the Company Patriotic Friends of the Arts founded ( Společnost vlasteneckých přátel umění ) an art gallery ( Obrazárna Společnosti vlasteneckých přátel umění ), which was the forerunner of today's Czech National Gallery. The members of the association consisted of the patriotically minded Bohemian nobility and members of the enlightened bourgeoisie.

1902, the gallery was to the Royal Bohemian Collection ( Moderní gallery Království Českého ) as a foundation of Emperor Franz Joseph I. extended.

1918 the collection of the Society of Patriotic Friends Art at the newly founded Czechoslovak state was transferred and declared a " National Gallery". From 1919 it was remodeled under the direction of Vincenc Kramar through further acquisitions to a modern and prestigious gallery.

The Royal Bohemian collection remained an independent foundation. It was incorporated during the Protectorate in 1942 the National Gallery. 1949 both collections were combined by a state law.

Collections

The National Gallery includes, inter alia, following buildings and collections:

  • The Gallery of the Old Masters in the Sternberg Palace ( Palac Šternberský ) and in Schwarzenberg Palace is European works from up to and including the epoch of the Baroque.
  • In George Monastery ( Monastery and sv. Jiří ) is a collection of Czech art of the 19th century.
  • In Agnes Convent (Klaster sv. Anežky České ) are seen works by European, especially of the Bohemian Middle Ages.
  • The Trade Fair Palace ( Veletržní Palace ) houses the art of the 20th and 21st century ( Modern and Contemporary Art).
  • The house the Black Madonna was until September 2012 houses the Museum of Czech Cubism.
  • In the Goltz -Kinsky is the graphic collection that will be presented in special exhibitions. Currently also the collection of antique oriental and Asian art is exhibited. In addition, the palace headquarters of the General Administration of the National Gallery.
  • The Zbraslav castle (private property) is no longer used by the National Gallery.

The National Gallery annually awards with prize money of 333,000 crowns Price NG 333 young artists. For the first time in 2007 the prize went to the artists' collective Ztohoven that sparked between 17 June 2007 in the broadcasting of a panoramic image of the transmitter ČT 2 so that a mushroom cloud could be seen. For this procedure, the group was charged with excitement public disorder, but acquitted.
