National Health Service

National Health Service ( NHS) ( German: National Health Service ) refers to cross the multi-part public health system in the UK and Northern Ireland. It consists of four independent organizations:

  • NHS, National Health Service in England
  • NHS Wales Wales ( Welsh: Cymru GIG, Gwasanaeth Iechyd Gwladol Cymru )
  • NHS Scotland Scotland ( Gaelic: Alba SNS, Seirbheis Slàinte na h- Alba )
  • HSC Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland in Northern Ireland

The National Health Services were established in 1948 after the Second World War due to the so-called Beveridge Report, funded by tax dollars (not like in other countries through a social insurance and ) and offer any UK resident person medical care in the primary (GP ) and secondary sector (hospitals ). Have travelers from the EU or the EEA in an emergency also entitled to free medical care.

International, particularly in German-speaking countries, the NHS has a rather bad reputation. This is partly due to the often very long waiting times for hospital treatment, based mainly in the lack of doctors. United Kingdom is often referred to in the German press as a country of emigration of German doctors. Of the total of 2,486 in 2009, emigrated from Germany doctors have emigrated to the UK 96 ( U.S. 179, 701 Switzerland ). The postgraduate training of doctors in the UK has undergone some profound changes in recent years. A MMC ( Modernising Medical Careers ) program called has led to great turmoil within the medical profession.

Planned health reform

The reigning since May 2010 Prime Minister David Cameron, the UK operates according to its own words, the " radical NHS reform for decades ." In January 2011, was the second reading of a corresponding law in Parliament. He wants to stop the growth of health care, reduce spending the equivalent of 115 billion euros per year by 2015 to 18 billion euro, and especially the management restructure: Today manage 151 ' Primary Care Trusts ' (PCT ) 80 percent of the budget of all public hospitals and practices. By 2013, the coalition wants to close all PCT. The ten " Strategic Health Authorities ", the health expenditure planning and control in their region should be resolved.

Overall, this 24,000 jobs will be abolished. Instead, the general practitioners are to derive directly from the government spending pot of 80 billion pounds. And they are even for the best treatments for their patients do seek and pay for the provider.

The proposed law thus provides a stronger competition from public and private medicine.
