National Historical Museum (Brazil)

Museu Histórico Nacional is a Brazilian National History Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

The museum was founded in 1922. In the possession of the museum are over 287,000 exhibits, including a large coin collection from Latin America.

The museum is located in the buildings of the 1603 built Fort St. James of Mercy; the first building complex dates back to a 1567 issued Order of King Sebastian of Portugal. 1693 the prison Calaboose was built on the site. 1762 added to the fort, the ammunition depot ' Casa do Trem added. Recent extensions were the armory in 1764 and barracks in 1835.

The National Museum was founded in August 1922 by decree of the President of Brazil Epitácio Pessoa. The first activities were carried out in October of the same year. The museum houses among others Museum Library.
