National Library of Namibia

The National Library of Namibia (English National Library of Namibia ( NLN )) is the Namibian National Library, based in Windhoek. It operates under the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture.

History

The NLN goes back to the library of the Imperial Gouvements during the period of German colonial force in 1900. 1926 as these Library of the Legislative Assembly ( Library of the Legislative Council ) was extended in ink palace with books from the German colonial period. 1950 the library received the right of management of the national bibliography, before it was closed in 1980 for a short time. Four years later, the library was reopened in the former Schutztupplers Ludwig von Estorff. She was known at that time almost exclusively under the name Erstoff Reference Library ( Estorff Referenzbiblithek ).

In 1990 the library was transferred to the government give these to develop into a full National Library with the intention. In 2000, the library in its own building ( National Library and Archives Service ) has moved.

Inventory and Services

The offer of the NLN is divided into the areas

  • Namibian collection of 15,000 books and 78 newspapers, journal and magazine titles
  • African collection of 10,000 books and writings of the German colonial era
  • General Reference collection of 25,000 books primarily from the humanistic area

And also can be found in existing government publications from Namibia and South Africa, United Nations publications, World Trade Organization and World Bank, microfilms, thesis students, maps, videos, CD-ROMs, manuscripts and posters.

In addition to the presence and interlibrary the NLN, in collaboration with the South African Library Association, a cross-border lending. In addition, electronic publications are offered. The NLN is the registry for ISBN book numbers in Namibia.
