National Library of the Faroe Islands

The National Library of the Faroe Islands ( Faroese: Føroya Landsbókasavn ) is the National Library of the Faroe Islands in the capital Tórshavn.

The Faroese National Library is both a public library and an academic library. In 2011 it was combined with the National Archives of the Faroe Islands, also located in the capital.

History

The history of the library dates back to 1828, when the Danish bailiff Christian Ludvig Tillisch (reigned 1825-30 ), together with his staff, the official auditor Jens Davidsen ( 1803-1878 ), started for the then relatively isolated island nation the first volumes gather. They received this strong support from the Danish archaeologist Prof. CC Rafn. They secured for an annual grant of the Danish king (5 November 1828). Individuals helped to provide more than 2,000 volumes available within a short time. The library initially received the Danish name Færø Office Library.

Since 1979, the library in the current building is located at the park Viðarlundin á Debesartrøð, which was designed by the architect JP Gregoriussen.

In addition to the National Library there in the Faroe Islands 15 municipal libraries and 11 academic libraries that are supplied primarily by the National Library. In addition, institutions such as the Art Museum of the Faroe Islands have their own libraries.
