National Museum of Lithuania

Lietuvos nacionalinis muziejus, the Lithuanian National Museum, founded in 1855 is a state- funded historical museum in Vilnius, Lithuania, which includes several important buildings and its holdings include many objects and written documents. The museum organizes and coordinates archaeological excavations in Lithuania.

History

The Museum of Antiquities of Vilnius (Polish: Muzeum w Starożytności Wilnie ), was founded in 1855 by Eustachy Tyszkiewicz and was a predecessor of the present museum. At the beginning, the museum put his collection focus on the culture and history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was quite well known and attracted large numbers of visitors. After the January Uprising of 1863, the authorities of the Russian empire swapped out a large part of the collection to Moscow, the remaining residue was recompiled and the Public Library Vilnius incorporated. From 1866 to 1914 worked Museum and Library. As the Eastern Front of World War I in 1915 Vilnius approached, other parts of the exhibition were brought to Russia.

After Lithuania's independence in 1918, the Museum of History and Folklore was established, which was compiled from the remaining stocks of the antiques museum and those of the Lithuanian Scientific Society. Its director was Basanavičius Jonas, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence of Lithuania. After 1919, Vilnius became a part of the Second Polish Republic, the Museum of the University of Vilnius was connected.

1941 took over the Academy of Sciences of the collections of museums in the city. 1952 became the Museum under the direction of historical knowledge Chat Jewellers Vincas Žilėnas his independence. 1967 moved to new premises in the New Arsenal of the castle complex of Vilnius. In the following two decades, the museum acquired historical materials from around the country. In 1992 it received its present name, it is now subordinated to the Ministry of Culture.

Organization

The museum consists of five main departments ( history and contemporary history, archeology, ethnography, numismatics and iconography ) and has about 800,000 individual pieces.

The collection includes:

  • The Old Arsenal of the castle complex
  • The New Arsenal of the castle complex
  • The Gediminas Tower on Castle Hill
  • House and Museum of Kazys Varnelis
  • The House of the signatory
  • The Bastion of Defense Walls (all in Vilnius)

There is also a Department of Information and Education, a division of the distortion and preservation of exhibits, a department for restoration and a Department of Publications.
