National shrine

National Shrine (Latin sanctuarium national, Eng. Nationally shrine ) is located in the Roman Catholic Church, an honorary title of certain church buildings, mostly sanctuaries of national importance. It is awarded by the Episcopal Conference of the country concerned.

The award of the title International Sanctuary ( sanctuarium international ) is the pope reserved.

Currently 8 international and 157 national sanctuaries are declared world. The only national shrine in the German language is the Basilica of Mariazell in Austria.

The current eight international sanctuaries are

  • Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua (Veneto, Italy)
  • Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto (Marche, Italy )
  • Igreja da Santissima Trindade in Fatima (Portugal )
  • Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow ( Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland)
  • Monastery Trebnitzgrund ( Lower Silesia, Poland)
  • Altwilmsdorfer church to the International Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Stary Wielisław ( Lower Silesia, Poland)
  • Vissvētākās Jaunavas marijas Debesis Uzņemšanas 's Basilica in Aglona (Latvia )
  • Church of St. Thomas in Malayattur ( Kerala, India)
