National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore and in official English spelling, the National University of Singapore ( NUS abbreviation; standard Chinese新加坡 国立 大学, Xinjiapo Guoli Daxue ) is the oldest university in Singapore and at the same time comprehensive university.

It is with respect to the number of students and the courses on offer also the largest of the city state. Its main campus is located in the southwest of Singapore, near Kent Ridge. The University is a member of the university networks Universitas 21 and the International Alliance of Research Universities. She is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Asia.

History

The NIS was established in 1905 as a medical college under the name The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School. In 1928 it was awarded by the Raffles College according to the ideas of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, to create a learned and civilized colony, a supplement on the British model.

In 1949 a merger with the King Edward VII College of Medicine took place at the University of the Federation of Malaya. As part of the increasingly progressive independence of Singapore from Malaysia, there was an autonomous University of the State as the State University of Singapore. In the 1980s, the university was founded in 1955 by merging with Nanyang University to the National University of Singapore ( National University of Singapore ) their present form.

As a result of the merger of the two universities, the English language was established as a teaching and research language, especially during culture and linguistics can take place in standard Chinese, Malay or Tamil.

Construction

The academic year at the National University of Singapore is divided into semesters. Traditionally, the doctrine is based on the British system of small learning groups and the U.S. system of credit points in modularized seminars and lectures. The University has 16 faculties, which are called schools, including a conservatory. The main campus is located in Kent Ridge, while the Faculty of Law and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy are located in Bukit Timah and Duke -NUS Graduate Medical School in Outram.

Outside of Singapore, the University maintains seven colleges in Shanghai, Beijing, Israel, India, Stockholm and in Palo Alto, California. In the summer of 2013 was opened as part of a cooperation with the U.S. Yale University Yale NUS College in Singapore.

Reputation

In the year 2012/2013 the National University of Singapore was chosen within the The Times Higher Education Supplement under the thirty best universities in the world. In 2013, the university in the QS World University Rankings occupies the 24th place, which it is recognized as the best Asian university in the world.
