The NATO School in Oberammergau (Bayern ) is the primary training and educational center of the NATO operational level.

History

The school is located on the site of the 1935 built Conrad-von- Hötzendorf barracks in Oberammergau district of St. Gregory at the foot of Laber. These barracks and the grounds were already used at that time for training purposes.

In October 1937, the mountain - news department 54 of the 1st Mountain Division of the Wehrmacht moved into the barracks. When this unit was transferred to the Balkans, the Messerschmitt AG took advantage of the terrain, where he developed rocket engines and produced in an underground factory system, the first standard deployable military aircraft with jet engines of the type Messerschmitt ME262.

After the war ended in 1945, the underground factory was dismantled and American units took over the barracks, we would just use this as a training ground. Today's NATO School emerged from the U.S. Army Special Weapons School, founded in March 1953 and this year offered two courses. In 1975 it was renamed the NATO School ( SHAPE). In 2003, the school, under the Supreme Allied Commander insinuation to transform its current name NATO School.

General

In 2010, more than 90 different courses are offered on issues of policy and strategy for the NATO members, and various NATO partners. The management of the school is responsible for German and U.S. military personnel. There are more than 200 people, military personnel and employees of non-governmental organizations, engaged in more than 25 countries. Every year more than 10,000 course participants from 60 States, the NATO School. Since its inception, more than 185,000 participants were trained there.
