Naum Ya.Vilenkin

Naum Yakovlevich Wilenkin (Russian Наум Яковлевич Виленкин, English Naum Yakovlevich Vilenkin ), ( born October 30, 1920 in Moscow, † 1991) was a Soviet mathematician of Russian nationality, who is known for his popular science books.

Life and work

Wilenkin studied until 1942 at the Moscow State University, where he habilitated in 1950 at Alexander Kurosch. From 1951 he was a professor. He taught at various universities in Moscow and was from 1961. At the Pedagogical University in Moscow His areas were algebra, topology, functional analysis, theory of real functions and combinatorics. Among other things, he was a member of Israel Gelfand and co-author of one of the volumes in the textbook series on distributions.

He devoted himself primarily to improve the mathematical education in schools and received 1976 Uschinsky Prize for his school books.
