Nautilus-X

Nautilus -X (Non- Atmospheric Universal Transport Intended for Lengthy United States eXploration ) is a NASA concept for a manned spacecraft, which is no longer to land on Earth. Nautilus -X was developed by the Technology Applications Assessment Team NASA. The spacecraft was designed for long-term ( 1-24 months) exoatmosphärische space travel for 6 people. Nautilus -X is equipped with a centrifuge in order to limit the effects of weightlessness.

The spacecraft is compared with other space missions, relatively cheap. So shall the spaceship cost 3.75 billion U.S. dollars and be completed in 64 months of work.

Objectives

The original goal of the Nautilus -X is to be a stopover for long-duration missions to the Moon or Mars. Would order to facilitate route planning the mission, the Nautilus -X will be transferred to L1 or L2 Lagrange point.

It would be useful in an emergency situation as well as in the emergency ward or hospital for other crews current mission.

Other objectives are:

  • Support long-running missions with up to 6 people
  • Self-Powered and a separate power supply for the entire mission duration ( 1-24 months)
  • Capable of space travel
  • Support of manned landings on celestial bodies and then return
  • Support for external scientific payloads
  • Only space- efficient vehicle ( no atmosphere admissions )
  • Design of a multi-purpose vehicle teams- that the requirements of the NASA Authorization Act of 2010 corresponds

Construction

The spacecraft is modular, so it can be equipped depending on specific missions. So the Nautilus -X can be used with various drive modules, manipulator arms, docking port for ships Orion or Dragon and / or a landing for the ferry landing on the moon or Mars. So could be exchanged mission depends theoretically the engine and the fuel.

On the opposite side of the docking port is located, the centrifuge is equipped with a dynamic flywheel ring. Behind the centrifuge are water and hydrogen slush tanks, which are used for radiation reduction for the team in the centrifuge, through the creation of safe zones. Back in the Nautilus -X is the drive and communication systems.

In the standard version, the Nautilus -X will have only three pressurized modules for long-term mission versions may Nautilus -X will be equipped with additional modules.
