Nawshirwan Mustafa

Nawschirwan Mustafa or Noschirwan Mustafa Emin or Noschirwan Mustafa (Kurdish نەوشیروان مستەفا, Newşîrwan Mistefa; * 1944 in Sulaymaniyah / Iraq) is a Kurdish politician and scholar. He was co-founder of the PUK and until December 2006, the Deputy Secretary-General and member of the Politburo. The PUK is the most important party in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in addition to the KDP. Since 2009 he has been chairman of the Party Gorran.

Career

After finishing school, Mustafa went to Baghdad and studied political science there. In 1969 he returned to Sulaymaniyah and worked on the weekly newspaper " Rizgary " ( dt: Liberation) with that was issued by a group in the Democratic Party of Kurdistan to Jalal Talabani and Ibrahim Ahmed. In 1970 he founded together with other underground nationalist party Komala, which is not to be confused with Komala the Iranian Kurds. Because of his political activities, he was expelled from the country. He spent several years in Vienna, where he studied International Law. During the last weeks of his studies in the spring of 1975, Mustafa Barzani rebellion collapsed against Baghdad. Mustafa came into contact with Jalal Talabani and other Kurdish activists to form a new party. Later, the PUK was established, whose Secretary General Talabani and his vice were Mustafa. The PUK was established from the Komala and the group Talabani Schoresch the warranty. Talabani and Mustafa crowded into the new party back the Marxist influence in favor of the " Kurdayetî " concept. It was agreed that Talabani campaigned abroad for support for the PUK and that Mustafa organized the PUK in Iraq.

Military career

Mustafa was both a capable politician and a commander. He is respected for his services, his courage and his tactical skill. He organized the resistance of the Kurds in the uprisings against the Baath regime in 1976 and 1991. 1991 he led among other things to the struggle for the liberation of Kirkuk and coined the term Raparin as a word for the Kurdish uprising after the second Gulf War in 1991.

After the rebellion of 1991, Mustafa retired from his post as Secretary General of the Komala and dissolved it.

In addition to his political duties and obligations Mustafa wrote several books, especially about the history of the Kurdish press.

Current career

In 2005 and 2006 he began the reform of the electoral system within the PUK. His goal was to promote democracy in the party, back the nepotism and encourage young people to participate in political processes. But he could not prevail against the resistance in the party and especially against Jalal Talabani his reforms. As a result, Mustafa resigned from the party and on 5 December 2006 from his position from. He tried to continue his fight against corruption and nepotism. Currently, Mustafa survived as an independent politician and writer in Sulaymaniyah. He also plans to create an independent media center in Sulaymaniyah. At the election of the Kurdish Parliament in July 2009, he joined with the liberal- social democratic party Rewtî Gorran - Movement for Change to. Since then, he is chairman of the party that party. With the slogan " change" he was able to win 25 of 111 seats in the Kurdish parliament. In the 2013 election his party won 24 seats. The Gorran was able to remove the PUK many voting shares.
