NBC Symphony Orchestra

The NBC Symphony Orchestra was an American Radio Orchestra, which was formed specifically for the conductor Arturo Toscanini of the NBC.

History

For the creation was in 1937 David Sarnoff, longtime general manager of RCA, and the orchestra won first incorporated by Artur Rodzinski. On Christmas Day 1937, when Toscanini took over the reins in a broadcast concert from the later bad for his, because extremely dry acoustics infamous Studio 8H. Start as Symphony of the Air

Some members changed to other orchestras, but the majority founded the Symphony of the Air ( translated: " Radio Orchestra ").

A first concert took place in the fall of 1954 - without a conductor - instead. The first season then conducted Leonard Bernstein. In 1955, Leopold Stokowski took up the post of musical director and led it until 1963. During this time many recordings originated with the famous American conductor of time.

After withdrawal Stokowski, the orchestra disbanded in 1963.
