NDMP

Network Data Management Protocol ( NDMP ) is a standardized interface through which it is possible to control the backup and restore operations of NAS servers with backup software. The protocol was approved by the company NetApp and Intelliguard (later acquired by Legato, which in turn were acquired by EMC ) develops and in the Internet Engineering Task Force ( IETF) submitted in October 1996 to initiate the Request for Comments (RFC ) process. NDMP is now supported without these formal adoption by almost all backup software products.

Functions

Through the use of NDMP is otherwise necessary procedure, all data that lie on a NAS server to mount from a backup server, and to secure from it, unnecessary. This reduces the load on the network, the NAS server and the backup server.

Specifically, the following interfaces are defined:

  • Data Management Application ( the backup software that is sent to the NDMP services over the network commands )
  • NDMP Data Service ( interface to the NAS system where the data is stored )
  • NDMP Tape Service ( interface to the backup system, to which the data is backed up )
  • NDMP SCSI Pass -Through Service ( allows the backup software to send SCSI commands to devices that are connected to NDMP servers)

Usually, this protocol is bound to port 10000/TCP.
