Nea Anchialos

Nea Anchialos (Greek Νέα Αγχίαλος, ( f sg ) ) was by 2010 a town of Magnesia Prefecture in the administrative region of Thessaly. With the administrative reform of 2010, it was incorporated into Volos, where she has since formed one of nine municipal districts.

The Nea Anchialos Airport is also the airport of Volos. Nearby there is also a military airfield. Nea Anchialos has a popular beach and a marina.

Geography

Nea Anchialos located on the coast of the Gulf Pagasitian, southwest of the center of Volos, northeast of Almyros, southwest of Esonia and south of Feres.

Towns

The community consisted of three municipal districts, which now have the status of towns:

  • Nea Anchialos ( 47.806 km ², 6,409 inhabitants)
  • Aidinio ( Αϊδίνιο, 12.675 km ², about 350 inhabitants)

History

Occupied the site of the present town of Nea Anchialos in ancient times the city Pyrassos, which was already mentioned in Homer. There was a temple of Demeter. Pyrassos was destroyed 217 BC by Philip of Macedon.

Nea Anchialos was established in 1906 by refugees from Anchialos (now Pomorie ) founded and Burgas in Bulgaria. The city is laid out in a rectangular grid-like almost completely floor plan. In 1912, she received her recognition as a rural community ( kinotita ).

On April 20, 1943, the town was heavily damaged by the Italian occupying forces on April 30, 1954 the earthquake of Sofades with the strength of 6.7 to 7.0 on the Richter scale.

1955, the city was connected to the national power grid. In 1997, the villages Aidinio and Mikrothives were incorporated and Nea Anchialos to township ( dimos ) levied.
