Illegal immigration

The 12.5 km long border section between Nea Vyssa and Kastanies is one of the preferred corridors for illegal immigration to Europe because it is the only place between Greece and Turkey, where you do not have to swim through the Evros. Reason for this is that the river runs completely in this area on the Turkish side and thus can be crossed by a bridge easy. Since November 2010 175 members of the Rapid Border Intervention Teams were assigned to guard the border. According to the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection intended to April 2011, more than three meters high fence, equipped with thermal imaging cameras and motion detectors, occur at the portion. 2011, the construction of a moat was started to stemming the flow of refugees. In December 2012, the border fence was completed on Evros. The funds for this purpose brought the Greek government to itself. Since the completion of the fence, the rate of illegal border crossings in the Evros region has dropped to almost 0%.
