The Neanderthal railway station is a former railway station, today only stop on the S- Bahn Rhein -Ruhr in the town of Mettmann in North Rhine -Westphalia.

History

On September 15, 1879, the Rhenish Railway Company opened the last section of the railway station from Mettmann (now Mettmann city forest ) of their railway from Dortmund to Dusseldorf, which is regionally known as Wuppertal Northern Railway.

Along with this also the Neanderthal station was commissioned and inaugurated the reception building. This still exists today, but is no longer used in its original function. In the 80s the whole area and the station building was purchased by the landscape gardener Richard Boedeker and rebuilt as a residence. In the design of gardens and parks around the station the history of the railroad was involved and the terrain is filled with ancient artifacts of railway history along the old " Northern Railway " route as well as hundreds of species of bamboo, elaborately planned wall coatings and floor coverings.

The station was in the meantime of local importance, in addition to the two route tracks ( tracks 1 and 2), each with a platform, he possessed a trafficable in both directions evasion and fast tracks ( track 3 ), three marshalling and stabling tracks ( tracks 4-6 ), as well as a siding for freight trains to the nearby Mannesmann lime plant.

Finally, the track is frequented only by railcars and local freight trains. On January 2, 1999, the German railway passenger traffic all the way in after the track, and with it the Neanderthal station a year earlier on 1 January, the Regional Railway Company Kaarst- Neuss- Dusseldorf - Mettmann Erkrath -Wuppertal mbH (short Regiobahn GmbH) had sold.

Current situation

Following the acquisition of the course by the Regiobahn it was upgraded for the S -Bahn operation, all holding underwent extensive reconstruction and modernization measures.

The previous station Neanderthal was built back to a pure holding point, all tracks except the broken line tracks 1 and 2. The main platform until then, the trains stopped at the direction of Mettmann, was demolished. These trains stop since the island platform between the tracks 1 and 2, since this platform is relatively narrow, a new platform was built for the trains to Dusseldorf at the site of the former Überholgleises 3, which can be accessed directly from the bus station.

Since 26 September 1999, the Rheinisch- Bergische Railway Company operates the line S 28 the S- Bahn Rhein -Ruhr - initially at hourly intervals, from May 28, 2000 then at 20- minute intervals - from Kaarster See on Neuss Hbf, Dusseldorf Hbf and Neanderthal to Mettmann forest, an extension to the Wuppertal- Vohwinkel station is planned.
