Nebria brevicollis

Nebria brevicollis

Nebria brevicollis is a species of beetle in the family of ground beetles ( Carabidae ). Like most species of beetle it has no imported German name, occasionally he is referred to as Common dam runner. ( The variant " Pitch-Black dam runner" very rarely used is misleading and should therefore be avoided. )

The 10 to 14 mm large beetles have a glossy black color with reddish-brown legs and antennae. On the elytra are nine fine longitudinal grooves that give the beetle a characteristic pattern recognition. The widespread beetles are to be found, in contrast to other species of the genus not only on the damp, muddy waters banks in Central Europe, but often live in shady places at the bottom of humid forests. As a hiding place loose pieces of bark, stones or bodies are used in the turf. With its mandibles he recorded in hunting spiders, worms and insects, which are decomposed by secretions and are then absorbed as mush.
